I visited Frari church today at Campo dei Frari. If you only go to 1 church your entire time in Venice GO HERE. It is heartbreakingly beautiful. You could easily spend a couple of hours in here studying everything. Well worth the 3 euro admission. Titian’s tomb is here along with 2 of his paintings! Truly a magnificent place with enormous paintings AND a wooden choir stall that will leave you thunderstruck. Really. A completely over the top Italian gothic church built by the Franciscans a zillion years ago. Or so.
I ended up at the paper store and the Frari church because I walked just a tiny bit too far looking for the Scuola di Rocco. I wanted to see “Tintoretto’s Sistine Chapel” as it’s called. Full of Tintorettos covering every inch of the walls and ceilings. There are large wood framed mirrors you can carry around so you don’t have to strain your neck looking up so much. Fun!
Sorry no photos allowed. Okay who am I kidding? I snuck a few:

OMG! Jaw dropping. Would love to speak with the craftsmen and artists of their day. What is everything made of and where did it come from and how did it get there. Love the floor, the sculpture and everything. What a fabulous treat.

Ah, those Gothic arches – always a show stopper for me. Most of all, this beauty in Europe (southern Europe for me) simply leaves me wanting to cry it’s so absolutely stunning – and somehow I can still feel layers of energy left by the hundreds and hundreds of years of occupation. I most certainly stumbled around Greece carrying a box of kleenex. So happy you ‘snuck a few’. They made my heart sing. Thank you Mary Ann. xoDonna

I was hoping you would get to Frari Church ( I saw the Rick Steves book in your photo and thought you might). How nice to see it without a crowd, thanks for sneaking a photo, I bought lots of postcards when I was there in October. Good choice for a sunny day, the light just fills the space. Enjoying riding along with you.
