Burano was quiet, bright, alive.
I wandered slowly through the streets & passages. So much to see. I wanted to be outside in the warm sunshine so I skipped the museum. Didn’t go to Torcello either. Another time.
I stopped at Al Gatto Nero Burano for lunch. Thanks Erin for the tip!
Which. I shared with my friend orange cat.
He is giving himself a bath after a hearty fish dinner. He snuck in the front door when someone came inside the restaurant and came directly to my table. Hello kitter pants!
I was captivated by the bright colors. All the little details from the window latches to the shutters and curtains.
Everything fascinated me. The cyclamens were lush and full in all the windows. So pretty!
This shopkeeper has the right idea.
The vaporettos on the way there were crowded. Sardine crowded. I stood the whole time pressed against the side and looked out at the water of the lagoon shimmering under the sun. On the way back I found a seat inside.
Here’s a little video I made of my trip. Sorry, not a bit of lace! You can read more about Burano HERE.

no lace? it does sound like a lovely place to spend a day wandering…
Rhonda says
YAY you got there!! So glad! Those colors are just so alive! I love that island!
Cindy Woods says
Oh. My. Gosh. Those colors are Amazing! Makes me want to paint every single wall in my house a different color. Just beautiful…
Claire says
Wow, it reminds me of Curacao, in the Caribbean, only colder looking. LOVE the bright houses. And finally, a gatto. So does the restaurant’s name translate to The Black Cat of Burano? My Italian is nonexistent, but it looks a little like it might be that.

Love the colors. What a lovely way to start a day. I’m with Cindy, want to paint each wall a different color. What a friendly cat, must know there are distant relatives at your place. Found the video a little choppy, not sure if it is my download or camera trouble. Hope it is on my end.
Cynthia says
Just as lovely as I remember it, all those painted houses! Although there weren’t any ladies in fur coats when I was there in October, several years ago. 🙂

I am consumed with every entry and video. I get goosebumps when you send a video and I can hear paper crinkling as you bring forward items you purchased. Not kidding. This is the best part for me so far.
Orange cat…… mystical.

I am now furiously looking under couch cushions, between the car seats, pockets in the laundry….EVERYWHERE…for pennies to add to my Venice fund!

oh…to be a shop keeper in Burano. with a green door of course.

Me thinks thy videos would please the Doges of Venice. And me? You may ask thyself, do they please thee, Lady D? Oh most wonderfully, Contessa, I say to thee, and yet I am somewhat broken of heart, for thy videos end in such haste, it is like falling off the carriage with a thud. My heart longs for more. I should tend to allow my mind to wander to the Merchant of Vimeo, for it is they who must allow thy time to be longer. In the short term, the Merchant of Venice may be able to assist thee in thy plight. (sorry, couldn’t help it) xoLady D

MEOW! Love the colors!!
Caroline says
I wanted to stay a little longer but at least I have those colors to look at and remember on grey days. I have never seen cyclamens in a golden yellow/orangey pot but you can bet I will again. That was just lovely!
Sherri says
Wow what color. Just makes me smile! And of course the orange kitty which looks like ours. Her name is Orange. Clever name huh?
Jill says
Am I right in thinking it’s not a Mary Ann trip without a kitty connection? Love meeting the kitties of the world 🙂
Susie LaFond says
I loved the colorful shots and sweet kitta kat who graced the vid towards the end, I can’t get enough of these places, the food, the vast parade of shots and video you are sharing here. I am completely smitten. I won’t lie. Love is all I can say and so happy to be here, it is the next best thing, I couldn’t wish for a better tour guide extraordinaire.
xxooxx

I was just reading all the wonderful comments – it’s true – you do have a Kitty Konnection! I see a coffee table book … Cats of the Cosmos – I’m sure you can do better than that for a title – but you get the drift. hmmmmm ….. xoDonna

Thanks for the wonderful reminder of Burano – it was my favourite part of the trip to Venice last year. The coloured houses are amazing and the shopping was wonderful, but then I really like lace and emborideries.

I am so glad that you include the sounds as well as the sights on your videos – they take me straight to my happy place. I will never forget the colors of Burano.
Jenny says
Can you go back and knock on the door of the magenta house with the Christmas greenery out front and ask for a tour? The inside must be just as beautiful! Thank you for your beautiful pictures, videos, and words from Venice. Simply amazing.
Ingrid Petrini says
I am finally taking my time to go into this trip seriously . Had the house full over Christmas!
Am now looking through your instruction videos and I can see a pillow(ikea) white with black lines, leaves, designed by a friend of mine. Love that pattern. Fantastic to see it across the ocean.
Slowly catching up on you now. I realize we have been to the same shops.
Sue says
I loved the video of Burano! I did not get there when we were in Venice…time ran
out. It is first on my list for next Oct! You and I have the kitty cats in common, as I always come home with a photo of the local cat/cats. I guess I should make a new book titled “Cats of the World”! 🙂
Jan says
Oh, this is my favorite video so far (although I’ve loved them all!). I love the sound of the boats lapping against the dock. I loved the colorful houses. I love the sounds of this video – it is very soothing.
Violet Cadburry says
What a naughty looking little kitty…so cute! Did he purr for his dinner. Love your video of Burano, I felt I could just jump right in the screen and walk along with you. The Christmas ornaments are so special with the tinnie tiny little MAMs reflected in them…how did you make yourself so Lilliputian? You are the trickster:)
Chris Shoop says
I’m glad you found a friendly cat to share your meal with – he reminds me a bit like Morris in his first big movie role: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_u0uo0TxS-I
The video with it’s lovely sounds really do take us to Venice with you. Don’t you feel a little crowded with us following you around?
Cheryl Miller says
My husband & I were in Venice in 2012 and one of the side trips was to Burano. Wonderful, colorful town to visit and we had a huge lunch at Al Raspo De Ua on our tour. So nice to be able to “revisit”.
